The patch panel can be thought of as a large version of our CAT5-BOX-1. The networking cable needs to be punched down using a crimping tool. If cabling is run throughout a building it would terminate at the patch panel. Short patch leads are then used to connect the cable to the switch. A building may have many network points/cable runs installed for future use. The patch panel provides a way of labelling these various networking points and is a better alternative to having numerous unused cables dangling around which may cause confusion.
