WUG – What is it?
A WUG (wireless users group) is a non-profit community network, made up of everyday people, creating wireless networks between themselves and others using standard 802.11a/b/g/n wireless (WiFi) equipment, making it affordable for anyone to join up.
Each WUG around the country has different users that will offer different services. The services offered are incredibly varied and include the likes of Game Servers for use with network gaming, download services made up of numerous FTP and bittorrent servers that will allow you to download all sorts of useful applications and program updates and even windows updates. The WUGs have no speed limitations, or CAPs. You can download as much as you like, as fast as you like.
Sounds great, but how do I join?
Before you spend a cent on any wireless equipment, the WUGs have made is very easy to see if there is a wireless tower in your area for you to connect to. All you need to do is head to the www.wug.za.net website and follow the easy instructions. Firstly you need to register, and download a Google Earth plug-in. This Google Earth plug-in will show you all of the wireless points (users and towers) that you will be able to connect to in your area. You can even take the co-ordinates of where you live, and determine if you have Line of Sight to the tower of your choice, ensuring that you will be able to get a connection.
Once you have plotted your location, you can then start thinking of buying your wireless equipment. Just give us a call, and we’ll give you the best advice on equipment purchase, whether you just want to connect to the WUG, or set up your own WUG repeater. There are detailed instructions on the WUG website for setting up your new wireless equipment to connect to the tower of your choice, but should you have any hassles, the other WUG users are always happy to help out.
